Welcome to Martin (Marty) Newell, ADA, our newest Assistant District Attorney. Marty brings almost two decades of trial experience and his passion for criminal law to the Lauderdale County District Attorney's Office. We look forward to working with him!

Martin (Marty) Newell is a native of Haleyville, AL, who embarked on a 20-year career in the United States Air Force in 1981. Following his retirement, in 2003 he began his first year of law school at The University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA. Looking to return to Alabama, he transferred to Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham for his final two years of law school. Marty was a member and Senior Associate Editor of the American Journal of Trial Advocacy in his third year. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006 and began a general practice of law at the firm of O’Bannon & O’Bannon in Florence.
In 2011, Marty opened a solo law practice in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, specializing primarily in the areas of criminal and juvenile law. In 2015, he returned to Florence and continued his solo practice until October 2024. He has served on the Lauderdale County Veterans Treatment Court team since 2019 and loves working with his fellow veterans.
Marty brings almost two decades of trial experience and his passion for criminal law to the Office of the District Attorney. He has experience as a trial attorney in all levels of criminal cases, including sex offenses and murder.
Marty joined the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office on November 1, 2024. He will be primarily responsible for prosecuting cases in district court and will be the office’s liaison with the Lauderdale County Social Services Department. He will also be the DA office’s representative on the Veterans Treatment Court and Mental Health Court.
Marty has been married to the former Rebecca (Becky) Bennett of Riverside, CA, since 1996. They have six children.
